Functions of the Academic Council of an Autonomous College

The Academic Council is the principal academic body of the institution and is responsible for maintaining the standards of instruction, education, and  examination. Its extended functions include:

  • Scrutinize and Approve Academic Proposals

Examine and approve, with or without modifications, the proposals of the Boards of Studies related to:

      • Courses of study
      • Academic regulations
      • Curricula and syllabi revisions
      • Instructional and evaluation methods
    • If necessary, return proposals for reconsideration or reject them with justifiable reasons.
  1. Formulate Admission Regulations
    • Frame regulations for student admissions across various programs in alignment with government and university policies, ensuring transparency, equity, and merit-based access.
  1. Regulate Student Welfare and Campus Life
    • Make regulations concerning:
      • Sports and games
      • Extra-curricular and co-curricular activities
      • Proper use and maintenance of playgrounds, hostels, and recreational spaces
  1. Recommend New Programs
    • Propose new programs of study to the Governing Body based on academic demand, industry trends, and stakeholder feedback.
  1. Recommend Scholarships and Awards
    • Propose to the Governing Body the institution of:
      • Scholarships
      • Fellowships and studentships
      • Prizes and medals
    • Frame and periodically revise the regulations governing these awards.
  1. Academic Advisory Role
    • Advise the Governing Body on academic matters including faculty development, curriculum innovation, and assessment reforms.
  1. Implement Policy Changes and Reforms
    • Ensure the integration of latest national policies such as NEP 2020, including:
      • Multidisciplinary education
      • Flexible choice-based credit system (CBCS)
      • Academic Bank of Credits (ABC)
      • Skill development and internships
      • Outcome-Based Education (OBE)
  1. Monitor Academic Quality
    • Periodically review academic performance, teaching-learning standards, and internal quality assurance in collaboration with IQAC.
  1. Foster Research and Innovation
    • Encourage inclusion of research-oriented courses, project-based learning, and promote student research initiatives.
  1. Coordinate with External Academic Bodies
    • Liaise with affiliating universities, industry partners, and other higher education institutions for academic collaborations and resource sharing.
  1. Perform Additional Duties
    • Discharge any other academic functions as assigned by the Governing Body for the smooth and effective academic governance of the college.
