Term: The term of the nominated members shall be three years.

Meetings: Meetings of the Board of Studies shall be held at least once every six months

Functions of the Board of Studies (BoS) of an Autonomous College

The Board of Studies (BoS) is the basic academic unit responsible for curriculum planning, review, and continuous academic improvement of a department. It recommends the following to the Academic Council:

Core Functions:

  1. Design and Recommend Courses of Study
    • Formulate and revise curriculum for undergraduate, postgraduate, and diploma programs in the respective discipline.
    • Recommend detailed syllabi for each course, including learning outcomes, instructional methods, and assessment strategies.
  2. Enhance Teaching and Research Standards
    • Propose academic innovations to improve the quality of teaching, learning, and research.
    • Encourage interdisciplinary and industry-integrated course components.
  3. Recommend Academic Matters

Provide recommendations on any other academic issue referred by the Academic Council or Principal, including academic calendars, credits, evaluation methods, and course prerequisites.

  1. Introduce Outcome-Based Education (OBE)
    • Frame program outcomes (POs), program-specific outcomes (PSOs), and course outcomes (COs) in alignment with national qualification frameworks and industry requirements.
  2. Implement Choice Based Credit System (CBCS)
    • Recommend electives, open electives, interdisciplinary and value-added courses to promote student flexibility and holistic learning.
  3. Integrate Skill Development and Internships
    • Include skill-oriented, vocational, and experiential learning components aligned with NSQF and employability enhancement.
  4. Promote Academic Innovation
    • Suggest the introduction of MOOCs, flipped classrooms, project-based learning, AI-based tools, and blended learning techniques.
  5. Ensure Curriculum Alignment with NEP 2020
    • Facilitate multidisciplinary education, multilingual content, and integrate Indian knowledge systems, ethics, sustainability, and life Skills into the curriculum.
  6. Review and Update Syllabus Periodically
    • Conduct syllabus review workshops every 3-5 years, involving industry experts, alumni, and academic peers for relevance and contemporariness.
  7. Encourage Research-Based Learning
  • Recommend seminar courses, mini-projects, dissertations, and publications at the UG/PG level to inculcate a research mindset.
  1. Facilitate Industry and Academic Linkages
  • Engage industry professionals, R&D experts, and academicians in BoS meetings to align courses with current trends and requirements.
  1. Certify Curriculum Quality
  • Ensure that all new and revised syllabi meet UGC/AICTE/NBA/NAAC criteria and promote academic excellence.
